6 Fascinating Chocolate Chip Cookie Facts

In fact, here are six fascinating facts about Chocolate Chip Cookies I bet you never knew. Am I wrong? Let me know in the comments below if you’d heard of any. 👇

Ruth Wakefield - Cookie Inventor

1.

Created by Accident: Did you know that the chocolate chip cookie was created by accident? In the 1930s, the charming Ruth Wakefield, (see left) added broken chocolate bar pieces into her cookie mix expecting that they would melt. Instead, the classic cookie was born.

2.

“Butterdrop Do”: Chocolate Chip Cookies were first called “Butterdrop Do Cookies.” Ruth’s recipe first ran in a Boston newspaper and in 1936, she published her first cookbook and renamed them “Chocolate Crunch Cookies.”

3.

Size of a Quarter: The first chocolate chip cookie was the size of a quarter. It was super crispy and could be devoured in just one bite. How things have changed (it would take a couple of bites to devour our delicious cookies!)

4.

Lifetime Supply: This fact is pretty awesome – Ruth, the creator of the cookie was paid for her recipe with a lifetime supply of chocolate from Nestlé. After acquiring Wakefield’s recipe, the company invented the now ubiquitous teardrop-shaped chocolate chip in 1939.

5.

The Biggest Chocolate Chip Cookie: Wait for this… The world’s biggest Chocolate Chip Cookie weighed a whopping 40,000 pounds and had a diameter of 101 feet. It was created in 2003 by The Immaculate Baking Company in Flat Rock, North Carolina. Now doesn’t that sound pretty epic…

6.

Cookie Biscuits: Queue the language lesson! “Cookie” comes from the Dutch word koekje which means “small cake.” They’re called biscuits in England (of course, unless we’re on about Cookie Dough!), galletas in Spain, and keks in Germany.

See the picture of the charming Ruth in her prime? She looks so much like my grandmother when she was young. Or do all grandmothers and great grandmothers from the 30s look the same? Drop a comment below, I’d love to hear if we all had the same grannie, lol!
