Here at Angelic, it’s our mission to make life easier for those living with food allergies and intolerances. I myself suffer from food intolerances and my youngest son suffers from multiple food allergies. Food allergies and intolerances can have similarities, however there are some fundamental differences between the two that can be very serious. It can take time understanding whether you have an intolerance or allergy, and we’ve created this quiz to help you understand and learn more.

Which is more serious, and potential life threatening for some individuals?

A: Food allergies

B: Food intolerances

Answer

The most life threatening of the two is food allergies. An intolerance can be unpleasant with a number of uncomfortable symptoms, however these symptoms are usually short-lived. Food allergies can cause anaphylaxis and be life-threatening, and individuals must respond urgently to seek treatment.

What type of response does a food allergy cause?

A: Digestive system response

B: Immune system response

C: Nervous system response

Answer

Allergies cause a response in your immune system, this may present as rashes, hives, or chest pain. An immune response is the bodies way of attacking something it thinks is dangerous to it. Food intolerances are a response from you digestive system and typically cause symptoms such as vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhoea.

C: 8%

Answer

The average number is around 5%, however numbers can vary. This number is much higher for food intolerances, around 20% of people suffer from intolerances.

Answer

Nausea is one of a few shared symptoms between food intolerances and allergies. Although all of these are symptoms caused by either an intolerance or an allergy.

C: Eating a large amount

Answer

Just touching food can be enough to cause an allergic reaction in the most severe cases. Food intolerances are usually only triggered after earring larger amounts of the trigger food.

A: Anxiety & depression

B: Unexplained weight loss

C: Sore heads and migraines

Answer

Coeliac sufferers can experience all of the above. Whilst not life threatening, suffering from a severe gluten intolerance to gluten can have a serious impact on the your quality of life.
